BOSTON, MA — JUNE 29, 2021The Boston Ujima Project is pleased to present our second investor update for 2021. The Ujima Fund has continued to prove successful in raising capital, currently standing at $4.3 million, up approximately 24% since the release of our last report, and making steady gains towards its goal of $5 million.
“We're excited to launch our quarterly update. True to our practice, this update and forthcoming reports are in direct response to our community. We've heard from our community and partners, with care, that they'd like to hear more about the Fund,” said Johnny Charles, Ujima Fund’s Managing Director. “In the case of Ujima, it’s more inclusive of not only financial narratives, but the people that shape and are beneficiaries of that narrative. This update report and those to come aim to share not only the health of our fund but the very humanity that makes it possible.”

This quarter, we sat down with a group of Black women entrepreneurs invested in the Ujima Fund, spotlighting how they connect to Ujima’s work. Investment for these women is not just material, but about broader support for small businesses and entrepreneurs of color in their communities. In each interview, they unpack their entrepreneurial experiences and underscore the importance of sharing resources, skills, knowledge, inspiration, and time with other Black community members. In doing so, their work reminds us that anyone can be an investor. This spring, the Ujima Good Business Alliance welcomed two new members: Fresh Food Generation and Dorchester Food Cooperative. The Ujima Good Business Alliance is a local business association sponsored by the Boston Ujima Project for community oriented companies within its network. Members of the Business Alliance are business owners, managers, and entrepreneurs who are committed to advancing social and economic justice through the private sector. Business Alliance members find strength in unity, and value cooperation over competition to achieve shared success.
