UJIMA ESSENTIALS
2022 – ANNUAL REPORT
2022 – ANNUAL REPORT
In 2022, we expanded our team by welcoming four new full-time staff members across various departments, Ryan “Rei” Felder, Mari Gashaw, Geo Costomiris, and Yusuf Alamutu.
We hosted two assemblies: Black Recreation and all of the threatened and delicious things joining one another. The second assembly, inspired by Édouard Glissant, featured workshops, lectures and gatherings focused on participatory governance, and provided Voting Members the opportunity to ratify the Ujima People's Board, marking a significant step in Ujima's journey toward independence and sustainability.
We explored collective fundraising and stewardship practices through the creation of United Black Economies, with Black Farmer Fund, and Bronx Cooperative Development Initiative, demonstrating that Black communities possess the assets and power needed to fund, cultivate, and create the economic systems necessary to sustain our communities.
Throughout the year, we distributed over $80,000 in support of arts initiatives. Over the year, our Ashe Ashe fellows produced new artwork, programming, events and books. We welcomed our 2022-24 Arts & Cultural Organizing Fellow Shantel Miller. Our Micro Learning Pod Series offered a range of arts-based learning opportunities, including the “Brown II Book Club” led by Tomashi Jackson, “The Story of Me, You, and Us” by Tracy Beard, and “Cyborgian Liberatory Media” by Lyse Fedjanie Barronville. Additionally, we introduced our party series, Black Portals, to strengthen community connections and celebrate Black Joy.
We hosted over 90 events over the year, including 30 Ujima Wednesdays workshops which featuring speakers like Dr. Vincent Brown, Gerald Horne, Noni Session, Destin Jenkins, and many more.
